For those who don’t know what clip-less moments are, let me explain. They are when you decide to use clip-less pedals, and then forget to un-clip when you want to put your foot down, meaning you land on your ass in the middle of the road.
My first clip-less moment happened in one of the most embarrassing places you could imagine.
I fitted the pedals on the Tuesday night, then went up and down the street testing them out. I had no problems so was confident to use them on the commute the next day, bad idea.
I set the pedals to their loosest tension, and off I went. The commute to sixth form was absolutely fine, didn’t fall off at the traffic lights or anything, not even a near fall. But at the end of a full day at college, you become tired, and kind of forget some important things.
The last lesson was physics, and we got left let out 10 minutes early, so I was able to get changed into my cycling gear, and unlock my bike by the time all other peoples classes would finish, instead of leaving the college building 10 minutes after everyone had left.
So I got changed, then jumped onto my bike which was locked at the back of the college building. Cycled around to the front entrance and saw a few of my mates stood around talking. So I stopped at the side of the road to talk to them for a minute. There was one slight problem though, I forgot to un-clip, and since I normally put my left foot down, went toppling over straight into the group. I knocked over two of my mates in the progress
So, there I was on the group, still clipped in with my mates around me. Not the best of positions to be in.
That was 9 months ago, and I still get reminded of it, as if all the bruises to the left hand side of me weren’t enough.
Remember, only 3 days left in the competition!
